Americans were finally able to enjoy Europe’s best-selling EV when Outlander plug-in deliveries began in the US in 2018. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV hit US shores with sophisticated new styling and a more powerful hybrid drivetrain. The Outlander’s attractive new front fascia and redesigned bumper gave greater visual appeal to the five-passenger crossover SUV. Equipped with dual electric motors and a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine, the system’s total output is 200 horsepower and 249 pound-feet of torque. The Outlander can operate in All-Electric, Series, or Parallel Hybrid modes. The All-Electric mode drives the car exclusively with the vehicle’s 12-kWh lithium-ion battery pack for 22 pollution- free miles. During longer trips, Series mode allows the gas engine to power the Outlander’s electric motors and recharge its battery. Parallel Hybrid mode runs predominantly on the gas engine while drawing extra oomph from the electric motors for strenuous acts such as driving uphill. This electric supplement achieves improved fuel efficiency, earning the Outlander an EPA rating of 74 MPGe. Unusual for a plug-in hybrid, the Outlander comes with DC fast charging.

This attractive SUV has proven itself capable in world markets and has appealed to American consumers looking for a tall, spacious wagon with all-wheel drive and great fuel efficiency. Its 1,500-pound towing capacity is sufficient to haul small off-road vehicles and boats.The Outlander’s MSRP is $20,000 less than comparable options from BMW, Mercedes- Benz, and Volvo, lending greater affordability to hybrid driving.
