After easing into EV production with the Panamera and Cayenne hybrids, Porsche is delivered its first all-electric vehicle, the Taycan in 2020. With near supercar–level looks and performance, the “soul of a spirited young horse” is gunning for the EV world’s top spot, which Tesla has held since the 2012 release of its Model S. In many metrics, the Taycan matches or bests the Model S. It wins in a beauty contest with a stylishly low roof and front-end along with a slippery body that sits on luxe 19- or 20-inch wheels. The Taycan is also impressively tech-savvy, featuring smartphone-activated doors and an innovative charge port touch sensor that, when triggered, prompts the charge door to glide in and up to reveal the charging mechanism—a far more elegant solution than the traditional hinge. As expected of a Porsche, the Taycan is designed to perform. Its four trims range between 321-750 horsepower and its top “Turbo S” model bullets from 0-60 mph in a hyper-quick 2.6 seconds. Drivers can zoom around in the Taycan for 200 miles before recharging. The cabin boasts a sleek panoramic glass roof, four commodious bucket seats, three standard touchscreens, and an optional fourth on the right side of the dash for convenient front- passenger operation of the infotainment system. A host of safety features are included, while Porsche’s InnoDrive autonomous-driving is available for an extra charge. The Porsche Taycan has set the new standard in EV luxury, and promises to seduce performance enthusiasts who are able to afford the swanky sedan.
