Designed in partnership with Toyota and very closely related to the bZ4X, the Subaru Solterra represents Subaru’s first EV and their vision for what an electric Subaru should be, built on what they call the “e-Subaru Global Platform.” Following the same design philosophy as the Toyota, the Solterra was designed to appeal to the “typical” Subaru buyer and it sells itself on the same key principles.
With standard Symmetrical AWD, active safety features, practical design, and some neat off-road tricks, it fits right into the brand’s growing portfolio. Like the Toyota, the interior and exterior designs definitely come across as unique and stand out from the rest of the Subaru lineup, but the car itself is rather average for a new EV.
With 8.3 inches of ground clearance and a “Grip Control” (essentially trail cruise control) feature, this Subaru doesn’t give up any of the off-roading legacy that the rest of the brand’s vehicles offer. In fact, it is one of the only EVs marketed so far that actually goes off the road in the advertising. The Solterra is Subaru’s first vehicle to feature a 360° camera for parking (and offroading) and electric X-Mode, to allow the StarDrive electric motors to provide seamless torque distribution for offroading or low grip situations. The interior is remarkably similar to the bZ4X, with the strikingly long steering column that contains the driver information center as well.
